Lord Krishna ! Whats up ?

We all  read about Whats-app in the recent news. It reminded me of a story from Indian Mythology .
Here is the story....
Satyabhama, one of the eight wives of Lord Sri Krishna, performs a ritual to possess Lord Sri Krishna all to herself.
The ritual ends by donating Lord Krishna to a sage named 'Narad' in the name of charity and reclaiming him back with anything that equals his weight measured with a simple balance.

When Lord Sri Krishna was weighed, Satyabhama failed to equal his weight in Gold, Money and All other Material Possessions.

In an last attempt to salvage, she pleads Rukmini, another wife of lord Sri Krishna to give something that can weigh or rather outweigh Lord Sri Krisha .

Rukmini , Lord Sri Krishna's wife and his devotee, places a “Tulasi twig (Basil Twig) embedded with all her devotion” in the other pan of the balance.

This small Tulasi Twig embedded with devotion outweighs Lord Krishna.

This miracle ( Leela) by lord Sri Krishna is a demonstration that Devotion outweighs all Material possessions.

No doubt, this story from Hindu Mythology has similarity to the present marketing world.
We often see Million dollar marketing programmes by corporate Giants evaporate and the one solution with rich insight and intent to serve the customer is the winner.
Does it Ring any bells ?
Whatsapp and Google hangouts!!

Effective Frequency - Advertising Frequency Theory

Looooong ago Thomas Smith , a London businessman wrote a book called 'Guide to Successful Advertising' in the year 1885! He says it takes at least 20 times for one to be exposed to an ad to make a decision!
Observe at what point the Herbert Krugman's three levels of exposure namely Curiosity, Recognition and Decision are at work !

No one can dispute the power of Frequency...
However, we need to estimate and carefully judge Reach Vs Frequency and Quality Vs Quantity.
In India, Washing Powder ..... is Nirma.
Thanda Matlab .... Coca-Cola!
What must have made these Brands as generics?
Is it Reach or Frequency or an ideal admixture of both?
Watch the list...
Aspirin is Bayer’s brand of acetylsalicylic acid.
Cellophane is a trademark of Innovia Films Ltd.
Dry ice  is a trademark by the Dry Ice Corporation of America.
Escalator is a Trademark of Otis.
Petrol   is a trade name.
Videotape is a Trade name of Ampex Corporation.
Xerox is a Brand name of a Photocopying machine.

Chanakya Niti

Here is a collection of Chanakya's preachings and few important links to the original work by
Shri R Shama Sastry and other links to sites giving the essence of his work.
My contribution: copy-pasting of a few of the quotes and wisdom referred to as Chanakya Niti into a PowerPoint.

Here are few words about Shri R Shama Sastry who Translated "Arthasastra ":

Rudrapatnam Shamasastry (1868–1944) was a Sanskrit scholar and librarian at the Oriental Research Institute Mysore who is known for discovering and publishing theArthasastra, an ancient Indian treatise on statecrafteconomic policy and military strategy.
The Oriental Research Institute was set up in 1891, as the Government Oriental Library, Mysore. It housed thousands of Sanskrit palm-leaf manuscripts. Shamasastry, the librarian, examined these fragile manuscripts daily, to determine their contents and catalogue them.
In 1905 he discovered the Arthasastra among a heap of Palm leaf manuscripts. He transcribed, edited and published the Sanskrit edition in 1909. He proceeded to translate it into English, publishing it in 1915.[2]
The manuscript was in the Grantha script. Other copies of the Arthasastra were discovered later in other parts of India.
It was one of the manuscripts in the library that had been handed over by 'a pandit of the Tanjore district' to the Oriental Library.
Until this discovery, the Arthasastra was known only through references to it in works by Dandin, Bana, Vishnusarma, Mallinathasuri, Megasthenes, etc. This discovery was "an epoch-making event in the history of the study of ancient Indian polity". It altered the perception of ancient India and changed the course of history studies, notably the false belief of European scholars at the time that Indians learnt the art of administration from the Greeks. The book was translated into French, German and many other languages.

All his works received great attention from many great Scholars around the world, particularly European Indianists. Several titles were also conferred on him, including Arthasastra Visharada by the Maharaja of Mysore, Mahamahopadhyaya by the Government of India, and Vidyalankara and Panditaraja by the Varanasi Sanskrit Mandali.

Sutton's Law

Willie Sutton
Taken from Wikipedia
Willie Sutton was Top 10 most wanted figurative of FBI with charges of Bank robbery. Wikipedia says  During his forty-year criminal career he stole an estimated $2 million and eventually spent more than half his adult life in prison.
He is famous for his answer to a reporter who asked him why he does Bank robberies.
he simply answered:  "because that's where the money is."
This quote is the very basis of Sutton's law.

This means you should search for the "Obvious" while analysing or diagnosing things.
So, when you are in search of the obvious, you are expected to do those tests in a sequence that would result in the most effective diagnosis or analysis.

An extension of the same in medical parlance is....
When you hear hoofbeats behind you, think horses, not Zebras..

By the way...next time when you take up the task of analyzing a business problem, remember Sutton's law!
Such approaches in a business environment can minimize analysis paralysis

Million Dollar Dialogue

A life time of learning is trodden in to simple dialogues from films.
Here are few…

Numbers numbers all the way!

You often hear statements like "Our company has 2 billion dollar turnover"
Do you know what a billion is ? Can you write down the number ?
guarantee that most can not write this most often used number .I have an easy way to remember!

1,000 is 10 to the power of 3 - so to say one followed by 3 zeros
                 i.e 10 X 10 X 10 written as 10^3

1,000,000 is 10 to the power of 6 is  Million....
1,000,000,000 is 10 to the power of 9 is a Billion
1,000,000,000,000 is 10 to the power of 12 - Trillion

The trick is remembering  the 3 Table
  • 10^3 is Thousand,
  • 10^6 is Million,
  • 10^9 is Billion,
  • 10^12 is Trillion and
  • 10^15 is Quadrillion and so on....

Here are some fun facts:
Zillion : Means a very large number. This has no defined Mathematical meaning!

Googol : This is the number from where Our "Google" name originated!
googol means 10^100 ie 10 to the power of 100!, one followed by 100 zeros!

Googolplex :  Means  10^Googol ie 10 raised to the power of Googol
in Mathematical terms it is 10^10^10^2
I can not write this number @#$!%^&
Sure, I am not going to get a job in a company that has a Googol or Googolplex dollar turnover!

Be the change you want to see in the world

The context of this message is not important. These words have immensely impressed me. There is a lesson we all need to learn. Here are those words…

You are going to meet many people in your lifetime. Some of these people you may not like. But just because you did not like them does not mean you have to work against them. When you see somebody doing something wrong, tell them, “That’s not right. Stop it.”

You can make the world a better place. The change you want to see in the world begins with you.”

What is GINI ?

We all know economic inequality exists in the society. We keep hearing that Rich are becoming Richer and Poor are becoming Poorer. This is measured by economists with the help of an Index called GINI.
GINI is Generalised Ineqality Index. This is also called as GINI Coefficient or GINI Ratio.

Corrado Gini
An Italian Statistician named Corrado Gini invented this term in the early 20th century.
This is expressed mostly as a number between 0 to 1. 0 is Absolute Equality and 1 is Absolute In-equality.
The lower GINI indicates equality. Higher GINI indicates Greater Inequality.

So to say,a 1 GINI,the country has very high equality. There is no difference between  Rich and Poor.
All earn the same.

So, either all are Rich or all are Poor: Equality exists! It has nothing to do with the total wealth of a country. Gini Index essentially tells us how the income or wealth is distributed among the population of a country.

Though GINI is computed by mathematical Formulae involving Lorenz Curve, the basic understanding of GINI helps us understand the genesis of revolutions like  Occupy Wall Street
Congressional Budget Office report says that...

in 1980, 1% of the US population earned  9.1%  of the Total income of US.
in 2006, 1% of the US population earned 18.8% of the Total income of US.
.....This is the Genesis of Occupy Wall Street!

To understand GINI a little better...Let us take this small hypothetical example....

Consider Country A  with a total wealth $ 100 Million and a Population of 100. Consider that and each citizen earns $1Million So, the wealth is equally distributed.  so , the GINI Index will be 0.
This means complete Equality! The wealth of a country is equally distributed. There is No Inequality.
Now think of this....
99 Citizens together earn $1Million (each earning $ 10,101*99 Citizens =$ 1,000,000 ) .1 Citizen earns rest of $ 99 Million. This is absolute InEquality! So the GINI will be almost equal to 1

Let me give you yet another example. If someone says.... 5% of the population hold 80% of the wealth of the nation, Rest of the 95% population hold 20% of the wealth, The country will have high Gini.
Here is the GINI  map of the world.

Here is a wonderful Infography from Visual Economics.
