A good PowerPoint is the starting point of a good presentation.
It needs a good template to start with.

Deja vu.. Black Berry


It was a couple of years ago, myself and my colleagues on our way to the office were discussing ‘Blackberry Boys' and we all felt that BB will die soon. 
We could peep into the future with ease...easily but wonder how BB missed it and messed it! It is Hot on the web to discuss reasons for BB’s debacle...
However, My take is…
  • Respect the Customer.
  • Listen.
  • Unlearn to Re-learn.
Starting from the day your confidence gets appended with ‘over’, your days are numbered. 
Take a look at the videos. they thought that it's market-shaping! 
Well, the market shaped the RIM.
Two years later, RIM is dead and BB10 is a new avatar.
If BB is to rise like a Phoenix, It will have to patiently wait for iPhone or Samsung to do the same mistake!

We receive updates on LinkedIn every day.
Piqued by the quantum of updates, I was cursing LinkedIn for pushing irrelevant updates. 
The moment you open LinkedIn, you are greeted with updates of your connections following innumerable companies and these lists are never-ending. In the process, you may miss knowledge updates.
I was about to write to LinkedIn to give choice to the users what to view and what not to view. Then,I took a deeper look at the menu. I realized that my ignorance was profound.
The choice is already there.
I just had to find it.

The same is true with our lives. Everyday opportunities and choices are presented to you like a menu.

Cartograms - It's a new World out there...

A couple of days back, I had an idea to create World Map based on variables such as Population, GDP, Per capita health care expenditure etc.
I was excited...I thought I found a new visualization model...I dreamt of  ...name.....fame...new contribution to the world of visualization...
Then, I did a little search on Google. I understood such visualizations are in vogue and are called Cartograms...
In the end, I cursed that someone copied my idea even before I could conceive it...
However, I have come to terms with it...

Let's see what these Cartograms are..
For those who are familiar with Bubble Charts, understanding Cartogram is easy...
Cartograms are simply maps of the world wherein the size of an entity like a country or a Continent is proportional to the size of the variable being depicted.
Let me give you an example.

If we were to create a Cartogram of the world based on the Area of each country, you will see the Map exactly like the world map we see... Like the one on the right side...



If we were to create a cartogram of the world based on the Population of each Country, you will see the map like this. on the left side...

You will see the world from a different viewpoint...

I tried to recreate the same on Excel with varied results.

Beware... Busy Executive

I wish to draw the attention of  Busy Executive to the three most common pitfalls in using ... Google, Linked In and  Spell Check.

Many a time you receive Motivating emails, Impressive quotations, elegantly crafted CVs, Well drafted letters and Reports with linguistic gymnastics.
Copy a couple of sentences and Google them. Bingo. 
You will reach the original article! The right word is Plagiarism.
It’s not uncommon for a busy executive to copy content from the Internet and create presentations and documents. The same is true while using documents from your colleagues.
Whenever you are dealing with office documents, you must remember, the official documents carry with them their properties.
What are the properties of a document?
Go to FILE in the menu on the document >> Click on PROPERTIES
You will be amazed to see the extent of information available.
Details like TITLE, AUTHOR may cause embarrassment if you have copied someone else’s file and updated the same file.
Change the author's name and other properties if you wish to avoid embarrassments.
Maybe many are not aware of the document properties… However, YOU must know!
Imagine if you had copied the CV format of your colleague and just changed the contents here and there and it goes to an HR guy who knows how to check the properties of a document!
The embarrassment is completely avoidable.

Today’s executives in most corporates are either Gen X or Gen Y who were brought up in the internet milieu and very few have learned traditional, almost extinct typewriters! 
The result is a high degree of dependence on computers!
With extensive use of computers, you are vulnerable to bloopers!

A spell checker can guarantee you "correctly spelt words in a wrong context!"

Not even a single spelling error! WOW!
All errors are typo errors! 
Most often, the problem is homophones ,similar sounding words like “their” and “there” and also with similar spelling words like “manager” and “manger”.
Check the list of British English Homophones
However, Good News is here....
Office 2007 and 2010 introduced Contextual spell checker!

Follow these steps to activate the contextual spell checker:
Step 1: Click office button
Step 2: Open Word Options
Step 3: Click Proofing

Step 4: In the When Correcting Spelling and Grammar in Word section, select the Use Contextual Spelling check box. Now Click OK. That's it!

Wangiri Calls : One Ring and Cut Calls


India knows the "value" of nothingness.
Ancient India invented Zero. 
Modern India Invented missed Call.
The whole world embraced both the inventions with high intensity.
This post is about the making 'misuse' of the invention called 'missed call' by some unscrupulous people.
I recently received a couple of missed calls from overseas. I tried returning the call but heard a recorded voice say that this is an international call and is chargeable. Little unusual. 
So, I Goggled the number to find innumerable posts confirming that it is a fake call.
Yesterday another call with +44 identifiable as England. But the number is unknown.I returned the call but this time no recorded voice. So I had the chance of hearing some husky Ohs.. and acoustic Ahs.. (once again, recorded I believe!)
It took me about 7 sec. to understand that it’s a chargeable porn call. So I dropped the call. I am sure I must have been charged for those 7-8 Secs. at a premium rate. It makes sense to presume that these numbers are premium rate International calls.
So, the moral of the story is ….
India invented missed call! Others have created a business case around it.
What an Idea Sirji!
Indian missed call is Communication. Overseas missed call means Commercialization.
Action : Ignore missed calls from unknown numbers ( Called Wangiri Calls: literally,' One (ring) and cut')

QR Code is the name for Quick Response Code.
Using QR codes is a rage in Japan.
QR code embeds information in a Matrix barcode and there are simple software and online tools to generate a QR code.
If you have a phone with a camera, you can read a QR code. All you need to do is download a QR code reader.
You can get QR readers from Getjar.
Once you know how to Generate a QR code and read a QR code.
You can go berserk with its uses like the one displayed here!

Fibonacci numbers are a infinite series of numbers starting with 1,2 and  rest generated adding last two numbers in the series.
So to say,A small series of  Fibonacci numbers is
1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,233………

Now,the trick is to look at two consecutive numbers in a Fibonacci series!
8 miles equals approx 13 Kms.
55 Miles equals roughly 89 Kms. and you find every two consecutive numbers can be used for conversion of miles to Kms. Bingo!
